Arquitectura, clausura e Cidade : inserção urbana dos conventos femininos da Província dos Algarves

Abstract

A presente dissertação aborda como tema central a arquitectura conventual feminina, nomeadamente a arquitectura da Ordem de Santa Clara na Província dos Algarves. Este estudo tem por base a compreensão das características arquitectónicas e urbanas desta tipologia tão específica, uma vez que a arquitectura dos conventos femininos foi utilizada para representar e proteger a virgindade das freiras, numa tentativa de reforçar a clausura, através de elementos que isolassem o convento de todas as ligações vindas do exterior. Relativamente à inserção na cidade, este estudo irá incidir sobre a análise das características de localização dos conventos femininos, tentando perceber qual a sua importância nas estruturas urbanas, nomeadamente no que se refere às características de localização, da implantação, das pré-existências e do relacionamento com outros edifícios. Estes pontos irão ser abordados não só no seu período de vida activa, como edifício religioso, mas também em contextos mais recentes, como na extinção das Ordens Religiosas, e até aos dias de hoje, como edifício de valor patrimonial.

This thesis approaches as main theme, the female’s conventual architecture, particularly in the Order of Santa Clara, in the Província dos Algarves. This study is built on the understanding of the architectonical and urban characteristics of a so specific typology, as the architecture of the female’s convents was used to represent and protect the nun’s virginity, in an attempt to reinforce the enclosure, through elements that separate the convent from all connections from the outside. Regarding the insertions in urban spaces, this study will focus on analyzing the characteristics of locations of the female’s convents, and will also try to understand their importance in urban structures, in particular the characteristics of location, implantation, pre-existing constructors and relationships with other buildings. This points will be discussed not only in its active life period, as a religious building, but also in a more recent context, such as the extinctions of the religious orders, and even to the present days, as a building with patrimonial value.
