A expansão urbana de Portimão para Norte, na viragem do século XIX para o século XX

Abstract

No século XIX, houve grandes mudanças no urbanismo das grandes cidades europeias. As intervenções mais importantes foram em Paris (França) e Barcelona (Espanha). Em Portugal, também houve intervenções urbanas importantes, sendo a mais emblemática a construção das novas avenidas, em Lisboa. No resto do país, também existiram expansões urbanas, sendo algumas alavancadas pelo desenvolvimento dos caminhos-de ferro. No final do século XIX, Portimão teve uma importante expansão urbana para Norte, para responder às demandas crescentes de habitação, proporcionadas pelo crescimento económico da cidade. O elemento chave desta expansão foi a construção da Estação Ferroviária. Este trabalho académico pretende estudar e analizar essa expansão urbana, através de uma caracterização dos seus limites, dos seus elementos urbanos (o quarteirão, a rua, o lote) e a apropriação social do espaço, pelos moradores e visitantes ocasionais.

In the nineteenth century, there were major changes in the urbanism of the major European cities. The most important interventions were made in Paris(France) and Barcelona (Spain). In Portugal, there were also important urban interventions, with the most emblematic being the building of new avenues in Lisbon. In the rest of the country, there were also urban expansions, some being leveraged for the development of the railway. In the late nineteenth century, Portimão has had a major urban expansion north to meet the growing demands for housing, provided by the economic growth of the city. The key element of this expansion was the construction of the railway station. This academic work aims to study and analyze this urban expansion, through a characterization of its limits, its urban elements (the block, the street, the lot) and the social appropriation of space by residents and visitors.
